Medigap Plan D

Medigap programs are Medicare Supplemental Insurance policies that help you meet your coinsurance/copayments and deductibles.

There are ten policies, and each is known by a separate letter—A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. We’re going to discuss Plan D right now.

What Does Plan D Cover?

Each Medigap plan offers you different benefits. Plan A is the most basic, while the others all provide additional coverage. You should opt for the program that suits your requirements most closely.

Here’s what your Medigap Plan D will cover:

  • Part A hospital and coinsurance costs
  • Part B coinsurance or copayments
  • The first three pints of blood in case you need a transfusion
  • Part A hospice care
  • Treatment in a skilled nursing facility
  • Deductibles for Plan A that you need to meet before Medicare provides you with any healthcare coverage
  • 80% coverage for healthcare expenses in case of a medical emergency while you’re traveling outside of the U.S.

The difference between Plans C and D is that Plan C covers Part B deductibles, while Part D does not. Not only this, but because Plan C limits its availability to individuals who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, this leaves Plan D as a more available option to new enrollees.

What You Should Know Before Purchasing Plan D

If you’re considering a Medigap policy, it’s best that you consult with an expert and shop around before deciding on an insurance provider. While the plans are standardized by Medicare, the prices are not.

You also can’t purchase a Medigap policy if you’re covered under a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Supplement policies are only applicable for people who are enrolled in Original Medicare.
