Medicare Supplement Plan Comparison

The ten Medicare Supplement Plans offer benefits that might overlap with each other to ensure your health. So how would you know which one is the right plan for you?

Well, with Scott Sims Insurance, we have made this decision-making process much simpler!

We help you understand what makes each plan different from another and empower you with all the information you need to make the right decision.

Medigap Plans A And B

Out of the ten supplement plans, A and B offer the least coverage, making them less expensive than other plans.

Medicare Supplement Plan A offers coverage for:

  • 365 additional days of hospital coinsurance once Medicare benefits end
  • Part B coinsurance or copayments for hospital outpatient services
  • First three pints of blood for transfusions each year
  • Part A coinsurance for hospice care

Medicare Supplement Plan A is best for people who require more coverage options than Medicare Parts A and B, but they don’t utilize the healthcare services.

While Medicare Supplement Plan B offers coverage for similar benefits, it also covers the Medicare Part A deductible.

Medigap Plans C, F, And G

Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan that offers coverage for all out-of-pocket expenses.

Plan F offers coverage for the following benefits:

  • Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance up to 365 days after the end of Medicare benefits
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance and copayments
  • Medicare Part B copayments and coinsurance
  • First three pints of blood
  • Nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • Medicare Part B excess charges
  • Foreign travel emergency coverage of up to 80%

Plan C offers the same coverage as Plan F, except for the Part B excess charges. Plan G is the opposite of Plan C in the fact that it covers the excess charges, but does not cover the Part B deductible.

However, if you are interested in Plans C or F, take notice that these plans are not available to those who became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020. If you want a comprehensive Supplement Plan but do not qualify for Plans C or F, then Plan G may be right for you.

Medigap Plans K And L

If you are looking for a lower-cost supplement plan, Plan K is just right for you as it comes with a lower premium than other supplement plans.

Plan K offers coverage for:

  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance and copayment
  • Nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Part B copayment and coinsurance
  • First three pints of blood for a medical emergency in a year

With plan K, you also have to pay the Part B deductible and any out-of-pocket charges that come with it. But, do note that the plan only covers 50% of the benefits, except for Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, which it covers 100%.

When it comes to Plan L, it covers almost the same benefits as Plan K, but it offers 75% coverage rather than 50%.

Plan M

Plan M lies in the middle when it comes to segments of Original Medicare and out-of-pocket costs covered by Medigap plans.

It offers coverage for the following benefits:

  • Part A hospital coinsurance
  • Part A hospital benefits for 365 days until Medicare ends
  • Part B coinsurance
  • Part A and B blood coverage
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility
  • 80% of a foreign travel emergency
  • 50% of Part A deductible
Plans D And N

Plans D and N are grouped as they offer the same benefits. The only difference in both plans lies in their copayments.

They provide coverage for:

  • Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance up to 365 days after the end of Medicare benefits
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance and copayments
  • Medicare Part B copayments and coinsurance
  • First three pints of blood
  • Nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Foreign travel emergency coverage of up to 80%

While plan N requires you to make copayments for doctor’s visits and emergency care.

If you are stuck between deciding on plan D or N, you need to determine if you can pay a little more for out-of-pocket costs or pay the premium in advance every month.
